The Republican party has recently gained a new presumptive nominee: Donald Trump. This fact creates yet another surprising turn of events for the presidential election. Dropouts have been a frequent occurrence for the Republican party. Some may feel Trump’s succession of the GOP nomination is an inevitable event, especially in the face of other happenings within the party. We’re here to help you keep up with the goings on of the election so far and who’s left in the candidacy runnings.
On the Independent Side…
- Gary Johnson, former New Mexico governor and 2012 GOP competitor, is running for the Libertarian party and has been since January 6. He scored a large amount of favor in the form of 1.3 million votes the last time he ran for office, which bodes well in the eyes of Libertarian politicians.
- Jill Stein is both a doctor and citizen of the state of Massachusetts. Like Johnson, she also vied for presidential candidacy back in the year 2012 but didn’t succeed. She now runs under the Green Party, for which she has been aligned since 2012. She is currently poised to become the prime candidate for the Green Party, potentially evidenced by the amount of favor she won when she first ran for presidential office. Back then, the votes for her totaled almost 500,000.
On the Democratic Side…
- Senator Bernie Sanders has won massive favor from the progressive-minded of the Millennial generation thanks to his pushing for more equal policies and better assistance for the disadvantaged. Prior to his run for president, he was part of the House of Representatives, where he served from 1991 to 2007. While he has lost quite a few states to Hillary, time will tell which of the two will come out on top.
- Hillary Clinton has come a long way from being the First Lady, having built a successful political career in her own right by serving as current President Obama’s Secretary of State. She has made many attempts to run for presidency, her most notable before this year being against President Obama prior to his succession of his first term. She and Sanders seem more evenly matched, with the two of them upsurging each other frequently.
On the Republican Side…
- Businessman and The Apprentice star Donald Trump has managed to beat out every other hopeful Republican candidate as of May 4, perhaps to the surprise of many. However, he lacks support from many heavy hitters within the Republican party, who feel Trump’s views and deliverance of said views are too extreme. His status as the last one standing, however, ensures his chances of becoming the GOP nominee for the Republican party.

Merrick Garland isn’t the latest Christmas character or patriotic decoration. He is our newest Supreme Court candidate. Garland’s candidacy is currently pending, and if approved, would make him the 113th Supreme Court justice of the United States. He was nominated on March 16, 2016, after the sudden and unfortunate death of Justice Antonio Scalia.
Who Is Merrick Garland?
Merrick Garland was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 13, 1952. His Jewish grandparents fled from Russia in the early 1900s, and he was raised in Chicago as a conservative Jew. He is married and has two daughters, both of whom are Yale graduates. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard Law School and worked as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Department of Justice. While working at the Department of Justice, Garland was one of the lead investigators in the Oklahoma City bombings of 1995, as well as the Atlanta Olympics bombings. He currently serves as the chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals in D.C. and has served in that role since 1997. An interesting fact about Garland is he is actually color blind and has to use a list in order to match his ties to his suits.
What Are Garland’s Views?
Garland has long been a well-known figure in Washington and has received praise from both Democrats and Republicans alike. In general, Garland is considered to be a more liberal, left-leaning judge, but he does have certain areas in which he has more conservative instincts, such as criminal justice cases. In 2010, the publisher of SCOTUSblog, Tom Goldstein, wrote, “Judge Garland’s record demonstrates that he is essentially the model, neutral judge. He is acknowledged by all to be brilliant. His opinions avoid unnecessary, sweeping pronouncements.” He is also known to be genial and rarely writes dissents, having only written 15 in the past 20 years. This is actually not the first time he has been considered for a vacant Supreme Court justice position. He has been considered two other times during Obama’s terms, once during 2009 when Sonia Sotomayor was ultimately appointed, and again in 2010 when Elena Kagan was nominated and confirmed.
What’s Slowing the Candidacy Proceedings?
President Obama’s nomination drew criticism from Republicans, who argued since he was nearing the end of his term, Obama should not have the opportunity to designate a new Supreme Court candidate. They also vowed to block any replacement candidate until the new president was in office, to which Obama responded by stating the President will continue to do his job until his term is over and so should the rest of the White House. One interesting tactic used in an attempt to discredit Garland was the allegation he once crossed over a relay race line when he was a child at summer camp. It seems currently, Republicans are doing everything in their power to prevent Merrick Garland from becoming the next Supreme Court justice, even resorting to childish techniques.

Donald Trump has stayed at the front of the 2016 race to the White House and remains a top choice as a Republican candidate. Not only has he been leading his party throughout the campaign, but he was recently named among the nominees to receive the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. Usually, nominations are kept secret, but the individual who makes them may reveal the person they named for the award.
There are typically more than 200 nominees each year, and Trump is just one of several notable figures. Among the nominees are reportedly Pope Francis, Nadia Murad and Edward Snowden. The individual from the U.S. who recommended Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize is unknown at this time, but it is supposed he was nominated due to his “vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China,” according to Reuters.
A Controversial Choice
Trump has been the center of controversy as one of the leading Republican candidates. He has drawn ample criticism for suggesting the U.S. build a wall to help prevent illegal immigrants from trying to cross into the country, as well as his proposal to ban Muslims from being allowed to enter. This came immediately after the terrorist attacks, which occurred in Paris late last year.
Could He Win?
Will Trump be a likely candidate for receiving the prestigious award? Most suggest he will not. It is expected to be awarded to Snowden, according to Kristian Berg Harpviken from the Peace Research Institute located in Oslo, Norway. Snowden is the NSA whistleblower who leaked confidential government documents and is facing espionage charges. However, others suggest the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, might win the award. She was named Person of the Year by Time in December of last year.
Residents of the Greek Islands are also among the nominees who may be likely to win. They came to the aid of Turkey refugees when other countries were turning them away. However, only three laureates can share the prize so three Greek scientists are being suggested to receive the reward on Greece’s behalf. These three include Susan Sarandon, who was the initial celebrity who helped raise awareness, a fisherman who is from Lesbos and an octogenarian.
A Long Wait
Nominations ended on Monday, and the winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize will not be officially announced until October. Donald Trump has been surrounded by controversy while campaigning for the White House, and his nomination for the Peace Prize is no different. However, it is important to note other nominees are just as controversial. Trump is not even the most controversial figure nominated in the history of the peace prize either. In 1939, Adolf Hitler was nominated, Fidel Castro in 2001, Hugo Chavez in 2005, Rush Limbaugh in 2007 and more recently, Vladimir Putin in 2014.
The world will have to wait until this fall to find out who wins the Nobel Peace Prize, but at least Trump is listed among the nominees and is in the running.
Regardless of your political stance, the upcoming 2016 presidential election is some of the biggest news to sweep the country. It’s important as a potential voter to learn all the facts before casting your ballot. For Democrats, this means learning about the 2016 presidential election candidates on the Democratic side, and what they have to offer to American politics. Here’s a list of who to look out for.
Chafee is a recent convert to the Democratic party, having formerly served as the Republican governor of Rhode Island. He joined the Democratic side in the year 2013, after supporting President Obama during both elections and being staunchly against the Iraq War when he was a Republican. He is also a legacy candidate, whose family has been involved in the US political scene for generations. He is the ideal candidate for voters who hope for the US to join forces with Iran and/or Russia, or try to rejuvenate the United Nations.
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Clinton is perhaps the most noteworthy of the Democratic candidates because she has promoted herself from First Lady to a powerful politician in her own right. She is part of President Obama’s administration, having served as his Secretary of State. Despite the controversies surrounding her supporters, the Libyan diplomat attack and her emails, she is a strong candidate to consider. If you’re on the Democrat side but desire a candidate with bite in their foreign policy plans, Clinton would be the best choice.
Jim Webb has the advantage of extensive experience, from working as a senator to his writing career to his time serving in the Vietnam War. He also used to be a Republican but changed parties. Some of his journalism work is ammo for controversy, but he is the best candidate to choose if you are in support of the nuclear agreement President Obama set up with Iran or if you want someone more hesitant over military action who has personal experience on the battlefield.
O’Malley is, interestingly, both a musician and a politician, having served as a rock band member and the governor of Maryland. He has been criticized in the past for potentially exacerbating police violence against black Baltimore residents with his policies on crime, which—at the same time—were also responsible for lowering the rate of crime in the state. Voters who support higher taxes and protection of undocumented citizens during the process of immigration reform will like O’Malley.
A former Independent candidate, Sanders has surged in popularity due to his call for equality and social reform. He identifies as a socialist, and his strongest desire is to introduce reform to the wide income gap that currently blankets American workers. He proposes free higher education, an increase of minimum wage and a larger overall government.

As the 2016 presidential election draws ever closer, it will be up to the Republican side of the American public to narrow their votes down to one candidate. However, with the number of Republican candidates running, it can be difficult to know who’s who and what they stand for—and how their politics will benefit the nation. To help you stay informed, we’ve compiled a list of all of the 2016 presidential election candidates running under the Republican party.
You likely already know Donald Trump from his two reality shows—The Celebrity Apprentice and The Apprentice—as well as his notorious real estate ventures. He began entering the political scene in the late 1980s. He is the go-to candidate if you are concerned with border issues because he aims to up the ante on border security. The rest of his beliefs are either unclear in their conveyance or lean more toward liberal thinking.
As both a member of the Bush family and the former governor of Florida, Jeb Bush has a strong background in politics. He grew Florida’s population and fought for gun rights during his governorship, but his conservative stance has lost some of its teeth as the years have worn on. He leans toward raising taxes and how much the government spends on public welfare.
Rick Santorum leans more toward the social side of conservative thought than anywhere else. He speaks up against the push for same-sex marriage and abortion law reform. However, his stance on governmental economics is weak. While he appeals quite strongly to the middle class, he verges upon being against free-market trade.
Dr. Ben Carson
Thanks to his exemplary career as a pediatric neurosurgeon, Ben Carson’s politics stem mostly from his experiences with and knowledge of human anatomy. He is severely against Obamacare, same-sex marriage and abortion law reform. However, where he stands on other issues, such as Israel and gun control, remains ambiguous.
Marco Rubio also hails from Florida, where he served as a junior senator. He is a powerful conservative candidate on nearly all fronts, save for being pro-Obamacare and pro-amnesty.
Chris Christie is one of the strongest supporters of school choice. However, he remains weak when it comes to other political matters, such as foreign policy and gun control.
Rand Paul is another junior senator, hailing from Kentucky. However, because of his father’s reputation, Paul has sought to create a separate political identity for himself. He shines in the realm of budgeting, privacy and federalism. However, when it comes to moral concerns or foreign issues, his opinions muddle.
Ted Cruz is a newbie to politics and is known for his extremely strong stance on almost every issue. His weakest subject is free market.
As Ohio’s governor, Kasich has an ample political background, yet his ideals have weakened over the decades. His only remaining strength is his stance on foreign policy.
Huckabee is one of the famous candidates, whose strengths lie predominantly in moral and social concerns. His other values, as well as his ethical behavior throughout his career, leave much to be desired.
As the only woman out of the Republican candidates, Fiorina is in a unique position that’s only exacerbated by her lack of political experience. She is actually Hewlett-Packard’s ex-president. Her politics rely more on her personal background than her political stances, which all lean toward the weaker end.

As the Soviet Red Army was closing in on the Nazis during World War II, it is rumored a Nazi gold train left Breslau, which was part of Germany and is now known as Wroclaw. However, this train never reached its destination, leaving many to wonder what could have happened along the journey. Recently, a pair of treasure seekers, one from Germany and one from Poland, claim they have discovered a 490-foot train, which may have been this fabled lost treasure.
What Is on the Train?
Perhaps one of the biggest questions many people have is what could be found on this mysterious Nazi gold train. Finding gold is always the top priority of treasure hunters, but what exactly will they find if this is indeed the famous lost treasure of the Nazis? While many believe there is plenty of gold on the train, on its way out of dangerous territory to be hidden away to avoid becoming the spoils of war, others believe because it was a war train, it is more likely to contain weapons, which may include bombs that are still active and could detonate.
The Danger of Exploration
One of the biggest reasons the train hasn’t yet been discovered is due to the dangerous area in which it would likely be located, coupled with the fact that there is no guarantee the train can be found. If it does exist, it is likely located inside one of the tunnels carved into the mountains near the Czech Republic, which would mean there could be a dangerous buildup of methane gas, increasing the risk of explosion during the excavation process. For this reason, it is critical for trained, experienced professionals to be called in if the train has indeed been located.
Has It Really Been Discovered?
While this pair of treasure hunters claims they have identified the location of the Nazi gold train, they have thus far refused to reveal their findings until they can be guaranteed a return for their incredible find. They are currently asking for 10 percent of the lost treasure, which could be worth millions of dollars. Once they receive a guarantee of this reward, they will provide the information required to the appropriate authorities so the train can be located and excavated with as little risk as possible.
Even though World War II ended 70 years ago, there are still plenty of mysteries that are yet to be revealed. This lost treasure and the prospect of finding gold is just one of them. If this train has been found, this will be an incredible part of history that can be put to rest. If it turns out the train has not been found, the search will continue by treasure hunters who are after not only the fortune it contains, but also the fame of being the one to find it.
