Donald Trump Snags Nobel Peace Prize Nomination
Donald Trump has stayed at the front of the 2016 race to the White House and remains a top choice as a Republican candidate. Not only has he been leading his party throughout the campaign, but he was recently named among the nominees to receive the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. Usually, nominations are kept secret, but the individual who makes them may reveal the person they named for the award.
There are typically more than 200 nominees each year, and Trump is just one of several notable figures. Among the nominees are reportedly Pope Francis, Nadia Murad and Edward Snowden. The individual from the U.S. who recommended Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize is unknown at this time, but it is supposed he was nominated due to his “vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China,” according to Reuters.
A Controversial Choice
Trump has been the center of controversy as one of the leading Republican candidates. He has drawn ample criticism for suggesting the U.S. build a wall to help prevent illegal immigrants from trying to cross into the country, as well as his proposal to ban Muslims from being allowed to enter. This came immediately after the terrorist attacks, which occurred in Paris late last year.
Could He Win?
Will Trump be a likely candidate for receiving the prestigious award? Most suggest he will not. It is expected to be awarded to Snowden, according to Kristian Berg Harpviken from the Peace Research Institute located in Oslo, Norway. Snowden is the NSA whistleblower who leaked confidential government documents and is facing espionage charges. However, others suggest the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, might win the award. She was named Person of the Year by Time in December of last year.
Residents of the Greek Islands are also among the nominees who may be likely to win. They came to the aid of Turkey refugees when other countries were turning them away. However, only three laureates can share the prize so three Greek scientists are being suggested to receive the reward on Greece’s behalf. These three include Susan Sarandon, who was the initial celebrity who helped raise awareness, a fisherman who is from Lesbos and an octogenarian.
A Long Wait
Nominations ended on Monday, and the winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize will not be officially announced until October. Donald Trump has been surrounded by controversy while campaigning for the White House, and his nomination for the Peace Prize is no different. However, it is important to note other nominees are just as controversial. Trump is not even the most controversial figure nominated in the history of the peace prize either. In 1939, Adolf Hitler was nominated, Fidel Castro in 2001, Hugo Chavez in 2005, Rush Limbaugh in 2007 and more recently, Vladimir Putin in 2014.
The world will have to wait until this fall to find out who wins the Nobel Peace Prize, but at least Trump is listed among the nominees and is in the running.
